Supplemental Outreach Initiatives

 

1.                  Job Fair – Danville Area Community College

 

Neuhoff Family Limited Partnership co-sponsored and promoted the Career Connections Job Fair 2007 on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Danville Area Community College Mary Miller Gymnasium.

The public was invited to meet area employers who were recruiting for part-time and full-time positions. More than 70 area and surrounding area employers participated in the 2007 Job Fair. Learn about the local job market and the responsibilities and requirements needed in various positions. NFLP conducted on site interviews with 13 applicants for future positions at the radio stations. These interviews were for positions in sales, operations, clerical and janitorial services.

 

 

2.        Tech-Prep Summer Educators Institute – Vermilion County

 

This program featured 15 teachers and administrators throughout Vermilion County spending the afternoon in the stations on June 7th, 2007. The program focuses on learning about our industries educational needs for future employment opportunities.  This program is a direct link into the classroom with those individuals who teach and guide students K-14. The teachers received hands on examples of current required job skills including production, sales, management and on-air positions. This activity is coordinated through the Danville Area Community College Tech Prep program Nancy Boesdorfer is Director.

 

 

 

     

     3.        Internship Program

 

Our summer intern program is available to high school or college students with a specific interest in broadcasting.  The 2007 summer program featured 4 participants including students from Huntington College (IN), Indiana University, Southern Illinois University and Eastern Illinois University. The students received training in modules consisting of news, promotions, sales and office management. The 2007 summer intern program runs from May 29th to August 11th 2007. 

 

 

 

     4.          Warren County Public School Classroom Presentations

     

Members of our staff made monthly presentations to the students of Seeger Memorial Jr./ Sr. High School’s Radio and TV class. Dr. Greg Doland invites NFLP staff to speak on topics of production, sales, promotion, on-air and management. The students are exposed to future career opportunities in the field of radio and TV through these classroom presentations.              

 

 

5.                      WDAN Summer Announcers Camp          

 

This annual program featured 14 students attending camp the week of June 18th, 2007 at the Danville Area Community College.  The program focused on young people interested in careers in the sports media field in general, but with an emphasis on radio broadcasting. Members of the NFLP staff conduct hands on training in announcing, interviewing, reporting and public relations. In it’s 12th year, the Summer Announcers Camp is responsible for 5 of our current part-time staff members.

 

 

 

6.                      Parkland Community College Broadcasting Community Advisory Board

 

Carol Wade, Program Director of NFLP serves on this local community college board, which provides us an opportunity to direct and recruit future applicants for the radio stations. Parkland College is the only local community college offering a full-time radio and TV curriculum in our service area. We currently have 1 full-time, and 2 part-time staff members through the Parkland College program.  

 

 

 

 

7.                      International Broadcasters SESAC Scholarship

 

NFLP participated along with the International Broadcasters Idea Bank in soliciting applications for a $7000 scholarship for students in the broadcasting field of study.  Applications were requested from over 10 listeners in our coverage area.

 

 

 

8.                      Vermilion County Vocational Education Delivery System

 

On February 6th, 2007 a staff member of NFLP was the presenter to Vermilion County students on the topic of employment opportunities in our community.  A group of 20 students were instructed on careers and educational paths in order to gain future employment inside the radio industry. The students were also provided instruction in the basics of interviewing and other job related skills. These sessions were held at Danville Area Community College.                        

 

 

9.                      Job Fair – CSI: Career Scene Investigation

 

On April 25th, 2007, NFLP participated in a program targeted at 9th – 12th grade students in Vermilion County.  Over 1300 students were a part of this on-campus program at Danville Area Community College.  NFLP hosted 40 students whom expressed interest in broadcasting or communications. These students were provided with basic career information as well as hands on training using digital recorders to simulate actual radio broadcasts. Students were e-mailed copies of their projects upon completion.

 

 

10.       Danville Area Community College – Teachers Workshop

 

Members of the Neuhoff staff were invited to present information for a continuing education workshop to over 40 high school teachers from throughout Vermilion County.  Material covered included the basic educational requirements for positions in radio, recruiting students for our summer programs and reviewing the history of radio in Vermilion County. This presentation was made on March 7th, 2007.
